FOREWICK HOLM ISLAND

Forewick Holm in the news.

Forewick Holm or Forvik is a 1 hectare (2.5 acre) island in the Sound of Papa in the Shetland islands, Scotland.[2] Located between Papa Stour and the Sandness peninsula the islet is owned by Stuart Hill, (aka "Captain Calamity") a retired yachtsman from England. The name Forvik is Hill's invention.[4]

In June 2008, Hill, the island's only resident, declared independence for himself and the island where he lives in a tent. He claimed this on the basis of a marriage arrangement between King Christian of Norway and the Scottish King James III that dates to 1468. He announced that the island has broken away from the United Kingdom, quit the EU and become a crown dependency.[5][6]

Holm is a common name in the Orkney and Shetland islands for a small, flat, rounded island. Wick is an anglicisation of vik, a Norse word for bay. A small islet called Scarf's Head is accessible from Forewick Holm at low tide.[3]
